-Oro Liwe holds Saturday in Ikorodu
It has been explained that the annual Oro festivals in Ikorodu – Magbo and Liwe, serve as means of cleansing the community and seeking peace and prosperity.
The explanation was contained in a statement today by the Ikorodu – Oga Development Association (IKODASS).
Liwe festival, which is the second annual Oro festival, will hold on Saturday, June 1, 2024, and women are expected to stay indoors from 12 midnight on Friday till 6:00am on Sunday, June 2, 2024, because the festival is a men’s affair.
Movement in and out of the Ikorodu Kingdom are also restricted for female residents and those that are visitors.
Magbo, the first festival being celebrated every year, was observed about two weeks ago.
The eve of the festivals are usually celebrated with funfair, with men and women and young and old engaging in social activities in different parts of the Ikorodu Kingdom.
“Magbo and Liwe are two (2) grand festivals in the history of Ikorodu. Magbo comes first every year in the month of May, while Liwe follows 2 weeks after ”, the statement said.
“The 2 festivals run for a period of 8 days each during which prayers are offered for cleansing of the city and seeking peace and prosperity for the land.
“On the last day of both festivals, women are restricted from coming out. Arrangement has always been in place to pre-inform people about the festival so that women can plan their ways.
“This year is not an exemption as Magbo festival was concluded Thursday 16th May 2024, and Liwe to be concluded on the 1st of June 2024”, it added.
